Bed-amazing invention!

In different periods, the materials from which the person used to “make themselves” have changed, but without exception, the types of beds are used today! Remember together: hammocks, trestles, wooden beds with canopies and modest, wrought handmade and metal of the simplest designs. Our song today … about the cot)))

Bunk beds are called collapsible beds with shell or spring mesh, mass produced during the Soviet era. Beds were provided for hospitals, dormitories, barracks, sometimes pioneer camps and even rest homes. In the absence of other furniture, bunks were also purchased for use at home. Huge high heavy iron beds. They were cleaned in the apartment necessarily with shades (these are handmade lace at the bottom) and a bunch of pillows that folded in a pile, and put a pillow on top of the rib or corner, and covered with a lace or tulle cape.

Springs of the mattress are located along the frame and in the longitudinal direction are fastened as follows: “in the heads” – to one traverse, and “in the legs” – to two centimeters apart by twenty. Because of this gap in the legs, some of the length of the mattress is wasted.

This drawback is constructive, and operational is that the springs are stretched and the mesh sags. And if the new bed is very comfortable to sleep, then the old is uncomfortable and harmful. Blood circulation in the bent position of the body is disturbed. To somehow compensate for the sagging of the net, you have to put a thick cotton mattress on the bed, but this does not help much. It is necessary to periodically pull the springs, which is quite troublesome.

The paned grid is a great invention of the 19th century. By the middle of the 20th century, practically all homes had catastrophically harmful grids for the spine, which had the ability to stretch and creak, leaving no chances either of the personal lives of their owners, or the health of their spine. In practice, the armored mesh is categorically forbidden to use at the end of the 20th century. Why, what do you think? Rachiocampsis. Such a system of sagging the body just ruins your health. And if you try to sell somewhere in the world a bed with a tufted net, it will not pass by medical parameters. But it was widely popular .. There was a need for a cheap, standard bed, and a grid of springs made easy. “Comfortable width” – a certain number of bodies of people))) So, 90 cm. The next size is 120 cm.

A separate word about the bumps on the bed. A sort of removable parts of different sizes and configurations, they were designed to decorate the backs of iron beds. How much they brought joy! Joys, when they could be unscrewed on the sly and then exchanged for something worthwhile. They cost a penny a penny. Therefore, we did not experience much. The reprimand and abuse from their parents were received in full … We bragged about each other and changed. The brilliance, color and size were appreciated.

For those who do not know what it’s about, I’m the podborochka “shishhechnyh illustrations.”

But the time has come when the beds with armored mesh gradually moved from the apartments to landfills. Not a single generation of pioneers fulfilled their plan to collect scrap metal.

An iron bed with a wire mesh is known to many of us childhood. About 30 years ago, such a bed could be found in almost every home.

They were double, one-and-a-half or single beds. They stood both in the children’s room and in the parents’ bedroom.

The well-known children’s prank of those who were born in the 60’s, were jumping on this very bed, and even a competition: who will jump so that the hill of pillows flies to the floor! That’s for the sake of this prank, we were ready to bear the swearing of our mothers and grandmothers, who with such love laid this pile of pillows)))

But since then, the technology of furniture production has become more complex and beds with armored mesh have almost come out of use, do not enjoy special success from the buyer. But, despite this, they can still be found in such institutions as:

  • military units;
  • summer camps;
  • sometimes hospitals;
  • boarding schools;
  • dormitories, etc

I found a message in the World Wide Web, in which we are assured to this day …

“Advantages of armor beds”

Strength. Such a bed is capable of withstanding heavy loads, and this is important where beds are used continuously, for example in hospitals, dormitories, barracks, etc.
Economical. As already mentioned, the price of a bed with a wire mesh is quite affordable.
An impressive service life, which is at least fifteen years. This means that when buying armored beds in any institution, the need to purchase new beds every year or every five years is excluded.
Hygiene. Metal beds exclude the appearance of insects, which are often engendered in wooden beds. In addition, they do not accumulate dust so quickly. With regard to cleaning, they are fairly easy to clean and clean with the help of the most primitive detergents.
Reliability. Beds made of metal are among the most durable and reliable, which virtually eliminates the possibility of breakage.
And not a word about harm to health!

Strangely enough, but the modern designers of furniture production about the “iron bunk” remember!

Having reconsidered the offers of the producers of even our country, I see “the song is still the same bunk” in a new way:

From the price list of the company N … Metal beds are reliable and durable. Metal furniture serves for many years without deteriorating performance. The metal bed is covered with protective polymer paint, which ensures the preservation of aesthetic products. The customer can choose himself according to the international layout of PAl, while the cost of the bed will not change. To assemble the beds, you do not need to be an expert, they are easily assembled without using an additional tool. Beds are metal single designed for domestic and public premises. It is used to complete various spheres: dormitories, sanatoriums, rest homes, health resorts, hospitals, boarding schools, military barracks, etc. There are four types of filling the frame: “rake”, grids: “square link”, “welded”, “zigzag” “. The size of the berth is 840 x 1900 mm. In addition, the metal structure is absolutely fireproof, is not susceptible to decay, drying out, the action of fungi and does not promote the reproduction of bacteria or microbes … ”

Nevertheless, they did not disappear. As they say, the new is a well-forgotten old! Old “bunks” (especially bright specimens) today visited the restorers and again in the apartments of connoisseurs of individual design styles! Look closely, it’s she … with little bumps, it’s worth it as if nothing had happened in the interior)))

“Killed copies” our practical people did not give to the pioneers, but adapted on the street)))

Everyone has another chance to sleep on that bed. Personally, I happened to sleep on such a bed. tormented in a provincial hotel in 2015 …

And you have a chance to see the children’s and adult “bunks” at our exhibition “Khrushchevka 60’s”.

I found an iron iron bed in the attic of my house; on it, probably, the children of former owners slept. She was able to complete completely, even a blanket with elephants … .dechach)))

But with an adult bed came a curiosity … An announcement in a local newspaper … “The museum will accept an iron bed …” Results did not bring and then our good-natured artist-designer said that there is such at his dacha, that’s just an old mother does not want to part with this bed. As a result, the bed from his dacha “came to the museum”, but my mother was angry for a long time … We carefully selected the outfit for the long-awaited bed, mattress, blanket and bedding of the 60s, and the coverlet and the cape for pillows-festive, lace.

But soon I had to write a warning sign because and the old and the young wanted to “flop” and swing on the bed with a panzer net and again flew to the floor cushions …

All repeats)))

For illustration, materials from the funds of our museum, as well as those found on the Internet, were used. Request to INEQUAL to this topic residents of our city Lida: share photos from personal archives, which are made against the background of interiors of the 60’s. Scan and return with gratitude!
